Town Hall 5 War Attacking Strategies

Town Hall 5 War Attacking Strategies

Recently, a few of our friends joined our clan and they wanted to go to war. But as TH5s (Town Hall level 5), they also felt compelled to sit the wars out because they felt they couldn't really do much to help us win. Our clan's initial suggestions like "use some dragons!" were not helpful because we had forgotten what it was like to be TH5. So I started a mini and decided to spend some time figuring out how to maximize TH5's resources.

I tried to find some attack strategies for TH5 in the forums, but aside from the one sticky, there wasn't much else. So I thought it might be nice to try to help out some of our new clashers by giving them tips to demonstrate that it doesn't matter what town hall you have, with a good strategy, you can still grab a bunch of stars in war.

Dos and don'ts for war preparation:

DO:
War upgrade priorites. If you want to war, it is important to
  • build your lab and keep it upgraded- this is how your troops and spells gain levels
  • keep your lab busy. Once the building is upgraded, lab upgrades don't require a builder
  • upgrade your barracks, wizards are really great to have for war
  • max out your camp space- a maxed th5 will have 135 troop spaces
  • upgrade your clan castle(cc), you can go from getting 10 donated troops to 15 donated troops
  • build and use your spell factory
  • If you are short on gold and/or elixir, try upgrading your collectors
  • If you are still short on gold and/or elixir, learn to raid!

DON'T
  • go into war without knowing your clan's rules and strategies for attacks; most clans have a firm strategy or expectation of who will attack which base
  • go into war battle without filling your camps
  • go into war without asking for troops for your cc (please check your clan's policies on donations)
  • go into battle without a plan - especially a plan for dealing with the enemy's cc troops!
  • assume that what has worked in multiplayer will work in war- the base layouts tend to be different and very often there are high-level troops in a cc (often much higher than what you typically encounter in multiplayer)
  • feel bad if things go poorly, this is a learn-by-doing game, and even seasoned players have attacks that don't work out

Army compositions:
So little is written about good attack strategies/army compositions, that I'd write about the things I consider:

  • wallbreakers are a good idea if the base you are attacking has level 4 (dark gray) walls or above. 1 wallbreaker is never enough, take at least 2, much better to have 3-6. Camp space is limited, so you have to weigh the pros and cons of using them for the particular base you are attacking. Always launch at least 2 at the same time right behind another troop (barbs, giants, etc) so that they don't get eliminated before blowing up the walls.

  • balloons - can be awesome! But require the right kind of base. Look for weak air defense (no wizard tower, no air defense or level 1 air defense, archer towers below level 5. Also, very helpful if these defenses are on the outside and quick to reach. If you choose to use balloons, you must commit to them; 2-4 balloons will not be anything but disappointment, try 8-10 or more balloons if that's the attack you want to try. Remember balloons go for defensive buildings first, then th, then other buildings.

  • giants - are great but they have a few weaknesses. Try to find the right number for your attack:

    1. they are slow- an all giant attack may run out of time before clearing all the buildings
    2. they prioritize defensive buildings, which means they will circle around a Town Hall and not take it down until all the defensive buildings are down (remember you cannot get two stars without taking out the two hall)
    3. they are terrible (slow and don't prioritize killing the troops) at taking out cc troops and cannot attack any air troops- if you don't deal with the cc troops they will kill all your giants
    4. So, take some with you but don't go all giants and don't launch them until the cc troops are eliminated

  • wizards - yes! They are great at dealing with cc troops! If you have giants (or barbarians) tanking (taking the majority of damage from defensive buildings) wizards will go around and destroy tons of stuff for you and will survive a long time. Wizards without giants (or barbarians) will not last as long on the battle field. If you don't have wizards yet, consider bringing a lot of archers to the party!
  • archers - almost always yes! these are possibly the most versatile troops of the whole game!
  • barbarians - can be useful. Personally, I would say I under-use barbarians compared to other people.

Attack Strategy:

1. you must eliminate the cc troops before sending in the big guns. High level wizards, valkyries and even minions can ruin your entire attack.
Don't let this happen to you:
There was a valk in the cc that eliminated almost all of the barbarians very quickly. Because the barbarians were launched all at once, in a bunch and the valk had not been eliminated (note: valks cannot attack balloons, but balloons will not prioritize attacking cc troops)

Within 11 seconds most of the army was wiped out and in another 3 seconds the whole attack was over.
Also note- 3 balloons had virtually no impact on the war base- if you want to use balloons you must use a lot more.

2. to eliminate cc troops you must lure them. Send one (low cost) troop to trigger the cc troops out of the clan castle. Let that troop die. launch 1 (low cost troop) at a corner of the base to get the troops to go to the edge and group together.

  • some people like to drop a lightning spell once the troops are grouped together and not moving around much (they are busy killing your troops)
  • some people like to snipe the troops by surrounding the enemy troops with wizards and or archers etc. Be sure not to drop all your sniping troops on top of each other! Valks and wiz have splash damage and will eliminate your troops as if they were one troop. Place each troop around but away from the previous troop. I would post another pic but I have reached my pic quota! I will see if I can post another pic in a response post to this one.
